The film tells the story of Randy Shilts, who, at the beginning of the 1980s, was the first journalist to write about the discovery of the AIDS virus. At a time when nobody had yet died of the virus, Shilts’ articles unleashed hefty controversy in the USA, which soon turned into a debate about civil rights, public health and homosexuality.

Biography Carrie Lozano

Carrie Lozano is an award winning documentary filmmaker and journalist. She is currently director of the International Documentary Association's Enterprise Documentary and Pare Lorentz funds. In addition, she is a lecturer at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, where she teaches documentary production and history in its documentary film program. Prior to that she led the Bay Area Video Coalition’s National MediaMaker Fellowship, a mentorship program for emerging filmmakers. From 2013-2015, she worked at Al Jazeera America as senior producer of the network’s investigative series Fault Lines, where her team garnered numerous awards including an Emmy and a Peabody, and as executive producer of the network's Dupont-winning documentary strand. Among other work, she produced the Academy Award nominee The Weather Underground, the live cinema piece Utopia In Four Movements and produced, directed and edited the Teddy Award nominee Reporter Zero. She is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and was a post-graduate fellow at the school's Investigative Reporting Program (IRP), where she also developed best practices for collaborative investigative reporting. Between 2011-2013 she was Director of Operations for New Day Films. Her recent film about acclaimed jazz pianist Fred Hersch, The Ballad of Fred Hersch, premiered in 2016.
